Descendant of Ancestor of

The twilight crystal split from its ancestor the marine crystal. The empty niche of the twilight slope provides more detritus in exchange for less sunlight. The red fungi-like part has grown taller to process more and the crystals have become smaller and shorter with fewer photosynthetic cells and more pores to let in water/detritus. The crystals have become softer due to fewer photosynthetic cells, potentially making it an easier target herbivorous fauna.
