Ancestor:Descendants:

The DNA damage caused by the cascade of solar particles produced many disgusting mutants. However, the two nucleus system proved highly resistant to negative mutations due to the 'backup' nucleus, but facilitated the beneficial mutations. One of the more successful was the evolution of the near ancestor of the thorny bottomed detristar. A mistake in reproduction resulted in three thornworms fusing at the head. The result was somewhat akin to a primitive and rigid starfish. The thorns moved to the bottom of the organism to help grip rocks and graze algae. Movement is very limited due to the rigid structure of the star. The detristar reproduces by shedding its arm tips, which grow into brand new organisms.
