From the cold surroundings of the mountains, some snow puff plants split and evolved into the uninhabited Russ River. Only cuttings of the roots found there way into the river, so now the whole species is asexual, so the plant has lost its flower stalk. They float on the rivers surface, with the center just breaking the surface whilst the leaves dangle down into the water in a tangle, giving. Because they reproduce quickly, they spread up and down the river soon. The leaves of their ancestor that used to lay on the soil now dangle in the water. These plants have now lost their roots, as they only float on the surface, where there is more light available. In winter, the plants sink to the bottom of the river and go into a kind of hibernation, using sugars stored up in the past year for energy.
