Ancestor: | Descendants: |
---|---|
The smackback has replaced its ancestor and expanded into its historical range. The small flapping appendages of their ancestors have become large battering paddles used both in sexual display and to drive off competition. The individual pictured above is showing the full downward position of its wings and is rearing up to better use them against a threat of comparable size. This is not a normal pose, typically they stand and walk on all fours.
Another adaptation of the smackback is its ability to safely infiltrate colony stalk colonies. This is because its nostrils have a flap on the inside that can close to prevent the irritating dust from the defense phytids from entering.
