The shelterkelp split from its ancestor, the flashkelps. What sets this species apart is the way it grows/anchors itself to the river bottom: in a semicircle shape. the open half of this always points downstream, somewhat sheltering the inside area. Fauna tend to lay their eggs in this space, as it provides some shelter from current and predators. Eggs laid under shelterkelp are also protected because if a predator does see them, it is likely to be startled away by the flash of light produced on contact that this flora has sustained from its ancestor. Droppings from babies hatched under it, along with the hatched eggs, provide nutrients for the soil and thus forms a symbiotic relationship with the shelterkelp. Occasionally, if a piece of the shelterkelp is detached, it will anchor itself, effectively growing into a new organism.
