The sea cural split from their ancestor. They were pushed out to the ocean due to competition from other iron flora. When they got their they found an abundance of space and opportunity. They are functionally the same as their ancestors, with the only difference being their structure and size. They feed on the organic particles that are stirred up by the waves and absorb minerals from the rusty sand.
