The sawgnaw split from its ancestor, the barkerclaw. It has grown twice as large as its ancestor and has changed its diet from immobile plent "bark" to lighting tree bark. Lightning trees have much harder bark than any immobile plents and the sawgnaw's teeth have gotten even bigger and stronger; in fact its neck and leg muscles have grown much bigger to help it bite through the extremely hard bark.

Being so much bigger, it can no longer burrow, and so it will make nests out of fallen leaves for its eggs to be laid in, which it will sit on until they hatch. Once born they will raise the young by feeding them pre-chewed bark. They will mate for life and live in herds of 10 to 20. Like its ancestor it kept the sexual dimorphism of the white spots around its eyes as well as a bigger set of bony nostrils for the males.

Once the bark is sawed off it will chew it up with its back teeth. Its stomachs have gotten more advanced to process its very hard-to-digest meal, thus they appear to have a potbelly. Their tail spike has split into two and is used to defend against enemies, while its front arms have just about disappeared. It no longer uses them and thus they are just vestigial limbs. Their color changing abilities is all but lost on its body, however on its crest it can still change colors to communicate with each other since they are deaf.
