The rust manticrab evolved from the leatherback scuttlecrab, splitting from it. It evolved to be a predator of many small animals, including beach sliders, stumpworm suckers, scuttlecrabs, and the young of larger animals. It even competes with larger predators, such as saucebacks.
The manticrab's body has changed. It has grown longer, and the legs are stronger, and each are terminated with a foot. Also, the manticrabs pincers become more specialized for grasping and perhaps slicing prey, and the mandibles changed to slice up morsels of meat more efficiently. The four eyes now fuse into two. The manticrab's coloration evolves to match that of the rusty-colored flora.
The manticrab's breathing improves. There is a spongy tissue behind the head, and the pores are designed to take oxygen directly from the air.
