The passenger foi split from its ancestor and the foi. Only a slight difference in genetic code makes this creature different from its ancestor, but that slight difference makes its gastric acid useless to certain creatures, including the transport ghark. Instead of burning through these certain creatures, it sticks to them as a very strong adhesive. Because of this, it didn't take long for the passenger foi to form a symbiotic relationship with the transport ghark.

The symbiotic relationship between the ghark and the foi is confusing, but both of them benefit greatly from it. The ghark and foi stay together basically for life. The ghark leads the foi to food and the foi eats part of it, then the foi spews gastric acid on it, making it digestible for the ghark.
