The odo is a hybrid of the colony cell and the assimilation floralgae. It has replaced both ancestors. A colony cell tried to consume an assimilation floralgae much like it use to do to its distant ancestor the algaaquila. However when doing this the assimilation floralgae tried to assimilate it. Eventually the two became one single organism with both qualities of the assimilation of cells and the ability to take on the characteristics of the cell it absorbs.

When consuming a cell it will bring the cell to the center of it and extract its DNA and assimilate some of its traits into itself. For instance if it absorbs a flash cell it might manifest the flashing characteristics of a flash cell. While the advantages can be helpful some of the time sometimes, it will get non-useful DNA other times. Non-useful parts of cells such as the reproductive DNA can cause it not to be able to assimilate anymore. Once the cell has extracted the DNA it will consume the dead cell.

It can live just about anywhere there is water, no matter if its freshwater or saltwater. The only place in the ocean it can't go is the polar regions since they are too cold and the deep vents because they are too hot. Once it entered the rivers it also was able to assimilate the assimilation floralgae's relative the algaaquila. While it can live deep below the ocean floor it cannot photosynthesize there and must rely more on its detrivorous diet.
