The maetoto split from its ancestor the tunki. It made its way into Mae Sandstone Caves and now eats only the bark of the balloonomae. Sometimes they even eat the sugar filled balloons of the balloonomae. It has shrunk in size so it can be small enough to climb around on the balloonomae. Its eyes have improved so see in the dim light of the caves. Also its back legs have developed gripping footpads so it can hang on to the trunks of the balloonomae better. It uses it s strong jaws and wooden teeth to rip off the bark.

They stay in groups of 5 to 10. They will sleep huddled together on the trunks of the balloonomae. Males will try to knock each other off the trunk with their sharp claws. Many males have scars all over their backs from this. It protects its self from predators with its thick blubber which is almost like rubber. In fact if a maetoto falls off it will bounce like a rubber ball without getting hurt.
