The lediiro has a flattened partition (a collar) on its top. This collar is filled with hydrogen gas produced by photosynthesis. The collar is less permeable than the other parts of the lediiro, so the buoyant hydrogen gas does not escape from the lediiro too quickly. The hydrogen gas stored in the collar lifts the lediiro closer to the surface of the water, where it has access to stronger sunlight.
In strong rays of light, the lediiro's body reflects the beam in such a way that it appears to glow slightly. The insides of a lediiro are translucent: since the inside cells are not exposed to sunlight, they do not need to produce pigment.
