The inflator gilltail has split from its ancestor, the crystal gilltail. It has specialized in eating only the hard orange photosythetic shell of the phytodiamond. They do not eat the red insides. Its main adaptation is its ability to inflate its entire body. This makes it too large to eat for smaller predators and allows it to blend in with the phytodiamond when larger predators are around. They appear like other gilltails when their body is deflated. They will mate in the spring and lay their eggs in the sand. They will travel in small schools of 5 to 10.
