The gateway gilltail split from its ancestor, the crystal gilltail. It has moved into the sea cave where it competed with the gateway beakworm for the gateway shrub. Its superior respiration and reproduction proved an advantage over the beakworm which lead it to extinction. The gills keeps it active longer and able to escape predators faster.
They are orange in color which helped camouflage them around the orange crystal flora. Gateway gilltails lay their eggs in the sand which hides them more successfully than just straight in the water. Even their stronger parrot-like beak has allowed them to bite off the hard outsides from crystal flora. Their eyes have also gotten larger to see in the dim light of the sea caves.
