The floating gelatin split from its ancestor, grew in size, and spread southward. It now has pockets that are packed with proteins that react with water to produce hydrogen molecules. the hydrogen is stored in special vacuoles of the gelatins cells themselves giving their flesh a spongy bubbly feeling. To control hydrogen levels in their bodies they will release the gas into their blood-sap to collect as bubbles that are eventually removed as a fart. They have fewer pores to keep blood-sap lose during floating at a minimum.
They will float a few meters over the water during the day to get the most sun and to keep out of the reach of aquatic predators, but if a breeze picks up they will descend back into the safety of the water until tomorrow. Because of this lifestyle their cells have began producing a mild antifreeze as a defence from the water inside them becoming too cold too fast after leaving the sea.
