The firpalm developed from the western pinepalm. Its long, thin leaves have developed into branches and on the smaller, pine tree-like needles (which don't catch snow). With the additional leaves, it can collect more sunlight. Like its ancestor, it has a non-toxic substance which now acts as a kind of anti-freeze which stops the firpalm from getting frostbitten. It has been so successful, it has not only spread to both polar regions, but has completely replaced its ancestor.
