With the gradual warming of Fermi Island, its native inhabitants have begun to diversify in both form and habits. The durambi is one such example, evolving to exploit the low-lying species of black flora and shrooms that dominate the island.
Large and bulky, this species is well adapted to the climate of the region, as well as to the problems the plague the island. Dust storms are an frequent menace in the low-lying lands, so this species has evolved a thick nasal flap to protect its sensitive nostrils. This flap also helps to focus scents that pass beneath it, as well as to help focus the "snorting" calls of the males during the mating season. Another adaption they have evolved are powerful limbs and claws for digging up earth, revealing tender roots and younger shoots hidden beneath the sand and dust. Such food sources make up the majority of their diet. However, they will add higher growing vegetation to their diets, and accomplish this with the use of a prehensile, split upper lip which is capable of grasping objects that would otherwise be just out of reach for other similar sized organisms. It is these adaptations that have helped this species to flourish.
