The deep ribbon gilltail split from its ancestor and moved deep within the ocean. There they found a habitat free from parasites and predators. They have shifted their diets to snotflora, feeding off of the abundant food source now that they lacked colonialballs. Their beaks have shrunk considerably, and they now lack the hatch that protects their ancestor's intake throat. They are smaller to cope with the increased pressure, and their skin and skeleton have become less dense. Instead of using gas to keep themselves afloat, their skin is filled with fluids that keep them at densities slightly below water. When they need to change elevation, they excrete the fluids out through their gill slits.
