This descendant of darkairoot bellepalm has a more efficient strategy to protect itself from the worms that scale it to eat its leaves. The umbrellas that covered the trunk of its ancestor are larger and cover the whole of the trunk. These umbrellas (a kind of modified leaf) are folded into the inferior part and form a kind of plate where water accumulates. The cryoprotectors it produced are now secreted from the exterior of the palm and accumulate in these plates, forming small puddles. These substances are relatively toxic for the worms, preventing them from coming closer, or else they would be poisoned. The protection also is effective in the water, where this substance dissolves and creates a region where only other resistant plants and species can remain.

Living Relatives (click to show/hide)

These are randomly selected, and organized from lowest to highest shared taxon. (This may correspond to similarity more than actual relation)

None found. Note that this does not necessarily mean it has no living relatives at all, but that, assuming all taxonomy is filled in, its entire phylum is extinct; any relatives it does have likely do not resemble it.
