The crorat split from its ancestor. As it shrunk in size to be less conspicuous to potential predators, its spikes became a partial covering of flexible yet strong non-overlapping scales, off of which claws and other prey-catching weaponry may bounce off, improving its chances of survival. It mostly eats small binucleids, including crystals, kruggs, and wingworms, using its generalized beak and crushing molars. The beak, like that of other neonodents, is formed from the upper and lower incisors.
The crorat has returned to an ancient burrowing lifestyle, using its clawed feet to quickly excavate tunnels in which it can hide itself and its offspring from predators. It is a heterotherm, taking advantage of the consistent temperature in its tunnels to avoid wasting energy producing excess heat but generating some to keep itself warm while venturing out at twilight. When pursued underground by a predator, it can collapse its tunnel behind it, making it more difficult to catch. Over the winter in the colder parts of its range, it hides away deep in the burrow to hibernate. It no longer has fully opposable thumbs, so that they can be used to aid in digging instead.
The crorat is social and mostly non-aggressive, being comfortable in close proximity to other crorats and sometimes sharing burrows. There is generally little mating competition, with crorats breeding frequently without preference. Females become broody when they are pregnant or have recently given birth, marking one of the few noteworthy exceptions to the species' non-aggressive nature as a defense against males that might kill their offspring to make them receptive to mating again. The offspring are somewhat well-developed at birth and can eat meat right away, though they take longer to develop the means to digest crystal flora. The crorat breeds several times a year and takes close to a year to reach the size of majority, though it grows throughout its life as long as food is available and it is capable of breeding at as young as 3 months.
As it grows throughout its life, unusually large crorats are not unheard of. An especially lucky individual can even exceed a meter in length, but its heart will usually give out before then.
The crorat varies in color across its range, mostly matching soil colors or having patchy markings to blend in with leaf litter. It nearly always has a light underbelly.
