The creeping crystal replaced its ancestor, the cellulosebane crystal. Due to over feeding by the crystalworm and arboreal diveskunik the cellulosebane crystal had trouble reproducing with all their spores getting eaten up. It also had trouble competing with its relative the venomerald who's spores were not getting eaten due to the toxin in it. Thus those who could asexually bud through their red fungi-like roots survived. This new method of reproduction could not spread them as far as the spores once could but it made sure they were not eaten like their spores were and thus gave them a fighting chance to survive.
Not producing spores anymore ment that those species that depended upon them thus went extinct. The crystalworm and arboreal diveskunik who fed upon the spores went extinct first now without spores to feed on. Then the arboreal limbless went extinct due to no more arboreal diveskuniks to eat.
