Ancestor:Descendants:

The chitjornpecker split from its ancestor, the rootdigging thornback. It has specialized in eating the fermi chitjorn, however it still supplements its diet with carrion. Is uses its thin snout to scrape out the soft photosynthetic tissues in the holes of the fermi chitjorn. Due to the new predators around, its 2 back spikes now have become many spikes running down its back. Its reproduction has also changed, rather than laying its eggs inside cryobowls, they hatch inside their bodies in a special pond-like chamber. They live inside as tadpoles for several months feeding on unfertilized eggs that periodically deposit into the chamber. The tadpoles also sometimes cannibalize each other. They stay inside until they have grown their legs and then are birthed. Soon after birth they grow their back spines.
