Carboneater ancestry relied solely on limestone for carbon, but as later generations moved from the caves and watertables, they began to rely on forms of carbon fixation, where CO2 is combined with other organic and inorganic molecules to create sugars. You all know one form of it, photosynthesis, which is CO2 being added with water to create sugars. Some also use methane, which reacts with water to form formaldehyde, that is later used in the formation of larger compounds.
